In a private conversation back in the present, Liv tells Burton that her mom made her end their engagement via a letter after lying to Liv and saying Burton had another girlfriend. We get another flashback to Season 6, this time of a conversation between Liv and then ADA Casey Novak, who states that Serena, Olivia's mom, was a college professor and that when Liv was 16, she dated a 21-year-old student of her mom's. And the writer who is looking to investigate on the man's behalf is one Burton Lowe, with whom Liv has a history of her own. He even missed out on his parole because he refused to show remorse for a murder he did not commit. However, at his sentencing, he recanted his guilty plea and has spent the last near 30 years maintaining his innocence. At the time, her then-boyfriend confessed to the murder and he's been in jail ever since. The case in question is the prom night strangulation of a 15-year-old girl named Haley West. RELATED: Manifest Saved By Netflix For Fourth And Final Season He's here on behalf of a true-crime writer to reopen an investigation from decades ago and hopes Liv will help him out. He's now graduated and working with a company called Forum, which utilizes new technology to reopen and hopefully solve cold cases by testing DNA samples that, at the time, were considered too small or degraded to work with. Amaro left the department at the time to go back to grad school and pursue a degree in genetics and forensic science. But there's more in store for this momentous episode than just a cold case: when Benson enters the interrogation room, she's met by the familiar face of former Detective Nick Amaro, who was her partner following Detective Elliot Stabler's departure, from seasons 13-16. Liv gets to the precinct and talks with Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola (who has been on the show almost as long as Benson) and he remarks she went with the short answer, long aware of his friend's parental issues.īenson is prepped on her next case, which is a requested reopen from the 90s. Funnily enough, in a flashback, Liv's mother is shown trying to convince her daughter to leave the force. He asks her about his grandmother, Serena, Olivia's mom, with whom she has always had a complicated and somewhat troubled relationship, filled with at-odds opinions and the fact that Liv herself was a product of her mother's rape. “Did she like that you were a detective?” he asks. This week's 500th episode of Law & Order: SVU starts with Captain Olivia "Liv" Benson walking her son, Noah, to school. This article also contains descriptions of sexual assault.
